Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain will happen to most, if not all of us at some point. The good news is that many cases of abdominal pain will go away on their own without treatment; however, it’s also important that you recognize when your abdominal pain may require turning to our doctors for care. It’s important to find out what’s causing abdominal pain if it is severe or persistent.

Abdominal pain involves pain in any area of the belly, from below the ribs to just above the pelvic bone. There are many reasons that abdominal pain occurs. While some causes are minor and won’t require treatment, some causes require professional treatment or even urgent care. Some causes of abdominal pain include:

  • Indigestion
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Gallstones
  • Gas
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Pregnancy-related pains
  • Food poisoning
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Food allergies
  • Pancreatitis
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Appendicitis
  • Endometriosis (lower abdominal pain)

We know that not every little bout of stomach cramping is going to send you to our office for an evaluation, but it’s just as important that patients understand when it might be time to visit our practice. You should turn to us for care if you are also experiencing:

  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Abdominal pain that’s getting worse
  • Sudden or excessive weight loss
  • Bleeding with urination or bowel movements
  • Abdominal pain while pregnant

When you come into our practice there is a wide range of questions we will ask you about your symptoms. Be ready to tell us the location of the pain, the other symptoms you’re experiencing, how the pain feels (e.g. burning; stabbing; sharp), and when the pain started. Those who are dealing with severe abdominal pain or are pregnant should head to their local ER for immediate medical attention.

No matter what’s causing your abdominal pain, we’ll have the diagnostic tools to be able to figure out what’s going on and provide you with the relief you need.
