Capsule Endoscopy in Lakewood, CA
Our gastroenterologists at ProDigest Gastroenterology & Hepatology Associates may recommend an endoscopy for a variety of reasons. Now there is an easier, less intrusive endoscopy method, known as a capsule endoscopy.
Why You Might Need a Capsule Endoscopy
Our gastroenterologist may recommend a capsule endoscopy to diagnose and treat conditions of the upper digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. A capsule endoscopy may be ordered if you are experiencing:
- Chronic stomach pain
- Chronic esophageal pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chronic nausea and vomiting
Common Conditions Diagnosed With a Capsule Endoscopy
A capsule endoscopy is useful in the diagnosis of common upper GI conditions, including:
- Anemia
- Peptic ulcers
- Celiac disease
- Esophageal inflammation
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Esophageal, stomach, or intestinal cancers
How a Capsule Endoscopy Works
When you visit our gastroenterologist, you will be asked to swallow a small capsule. This capsule contains a tiny camera that will take thousands of images as it works its way down your digestive system. These images are captured on a device that you may be asked to wear during the procedure.
After you swallow the capsule, you will need to:
- Avoid drinking anything for at least 2 hours
- Avoid eating anything for at least 4 hours
- Avoid strenuous activities, bending, or any sudden movements
- Don’t bathe, shower, or swim with the recording device on
Benefits of Capsule Endoscopy
A major benefit of capsule endoscopy is that it allows for better viewing of the small intestine, which can be difficult to see using conventional endoscopy. Capsule endoscopy also offers you diagnostic testing using a minimally invasive method of swallowing a pill, instead of having an endoscope inserted into your mouth. There is also no need for sedation with capsule endoscopy, so you can easily return to your day.
